After I graduated from college, I was vigorously searching for a job. While I was doing so, I came across many applications that asked for references. Not that this was a new discovery or something that I didn’t already know, but it got me to thinking, “If I were applying for a job to be a Christian, would I be able to use God as a reference?” Like, based off of the way I live my life, my knowledge of the Bible, and my personal interaction with God could He be used to give me a good recommendation for the job? Think about it in your own life. Does He know you personally? Can He say that He knows you by name? Has He seen you spend time in His Word? How about the way you treat others? Do you walk in love and treat others with kindness? Can He say that you work hard to represent Him always and bring glory to His name?
I could easily drag this analogy out but you get the picture. It’s an important question to ponder. I say this a lot because I mean it, Christianity is more than a label…IT’S A LIFESTYLE. So with that being said, we have to live out what we believe not just profess it.
Matthew 7:21-23 (NIV) says, 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
You don’t want to be cast away from God because He never knew you. Or in this case, not get the job because He didn’t know you well enough to give you a reference. Your Christianity is based on your relationship with God not just your declaration that you know who He is. So I ask you to daily consider this thought: “Would my life be one worthy of a reference from God?”
Purpose to live a life where God can reference you as a good and faithful servant.
